The governments of Austria and Germany have decided to once again extend the period of tightened border controls with their neighboring countries. The Netherlands has also decided to follow a similar example – starting in December, the security checks at the different border points will be intensified.
Austria has had stricter border controls implemented at its borders with Slovenia and Hungary for a long time now. This control period was due to end this month, but the Austrian government has decided to extend it until 11 May 2025. The decision to take such measures has been made due to the increased flows of illegal migrants, smuggling, the war in Ukraine, and the conflict in the Middle East. Germany has also decided to extend its period of stricter security checks until 11 May next year.
Starting from 9 December, The Netherlands will start a period of stricter security checks at its borders with Germany and Belgium. These measures will also be implemented due to increased illegal migration. The reinforced checks will be carried out at specific border crossing points, but the exact locations have not been identified. The Dutch government had planned to take this action at the end of November but decided to postpone the decision until December.
