Several days of heavy rain and flooding have brought a series of disasters to Central and Eastern Europe. More than 20 people have died in the region, some residents still have not been found and dozens of towns have been flooded. In countries such as Germany, Romania and Poland, many roads have been closed while some bridges and other critical infrastructure have experienced severe damage. This article gives you all the information on road closures and other changes happening in the region.
Austria
In the lower part of Austria, 250 roads are currently impassable. In the upper part of Austria, the B151 road between Seewalchen and Attersee has been closed to avoid possible flooding. The A1 and A2 motorways near Vienna have also been affected by the flooding.
Poland and the Czech Republic
Poland was also severely affected by heavy rain, especially on its border with the Czech Republic. Although the motorways are still passable, smaller roads have been severely affected. This includes roads such as the DK94 in Skorogoszcz, the DK45 in Krapkowice and the DK46, which are impassable due to the accumulation of rain. Three bridges have been closed in the country. In the Czech Republic, the towns of Opava and Jesenik are completely flooded and about 220 other towns are in a very high danger zone.
Romania
In Romania, the DN25 road between Vameș and Tudor Vladimirescu is closed due to heavy rain. On the A1, the difficulties caused by heavy rain are causing extremely slow traffic flows. In total, about 15 roads have been affected.
Hungary
In Hungary, heavy rainfall caused the closure of a bridge in Vámosszabadi connecting the country with Slovakia. Drivers are advised to use the M15 motorway in the Győr-Moson-Sopron county or the Monostori bridge in the Komárom-Esztergom area as alternative routes.
Germany
In Germany, the most affected regions so far are Bavaria and Saxony. In Saxony, flooding of the Elbe and Neisse rivers is expected, which may lead to the closure of nearby roads. The city of Dresden is at high risk of flooding due to the rising level of the Elbe River. The Carola Bridge located within the city has collapsed.
