New truck tolls to be introduced in Alsace, France

In 2027, a new road toll on trucks will be introduced in the Alsace region of France. The local government has decided to implement this measure due to the high number of drivers trying to avoid the German tolls by driving through France.

The new tax will only apply on certain roads. One of these is the A35 motorway located  next to the Rhine. This motorway passes through the city of Strasbourg and has not been subject to any tolls until now. The A5 motorway and the A36 motorway between Mulhouse and Neuenburg am Rhein will also be subject to the new charge.

As mentioned above, the reason for this measure is that the increase in toll rates in Germany has led to many drivers trying to avoid the high toll rates by taking advantage of the tax-free French roads. 12,000 lorries use them every day.

The new tax is called "R-Pass". Although the exact value of the tax has not yet been determined, a rate of 15 cents per kilometre is being considered. The profits from the new tax reform will be used to improve the region's infrastructure.
