Germany adopts changes regarding foreign driving licenses

Germany has adopted a law under which it is prohibited to make any entries regarding driving bans on driving licences issued by European Union and European Economic Area countries if their holders do not have permanent residence in Germany.

From now on, driving bans will be recorded only in the digital FAER register – during checks, the police will no longer rely on physical documents. This law means that drivers will face significant changes: control procedures will become faster and more efficient due to a higher level of automation; after changing a driving licence, drivers will no longer be able to “hide” previously recorded information; and all serious road traffic violations will be registered on the FAER platform. Thanks to this law, the risk of drivers facing problems while trying to renew their driver’s license in their home country will be reduced.
