Road tolls in the Czech Republic to increase by 15% next year

The Transport Ministry of the Czech Republic has announced that starting from March 2024 road tolls will increase in the country. The tolls should increase by around 10-15%. By using the revenue generated by the higher tolls the Czech Government plans to finance the country’s transport infrastructure.

The transport infrastructure is rapidly expanding in the Czech Republic. Some roads will be renewed and over 100km of new motorways will be opened next year. The road toll system generates around CZK 14 bn. (approx. 590 mn. EUR) in revenue annually. The new road tolls should add around CZK 2 bn. in additional revenues to this budget.

As explained by the Transport Ministry, this new price increase is possible because of new changes in the EU Directive according to which the European Union member states have a right to implement emission charges and determine the value of the toll based on how environmentally friendly a vehicle is.

The Czech Government had previously announced that the road tolls will increase by 53% instead. Starting from next year, the price of a vignette for a passenger car will now cost CZK 2,300 (97 EUR) instead of the current CZK 1,500 (approx. 63 EUR).
