Road bans in Europe in May 2023

The month of May is going to be more difficult for long-haul drivers given the introduction of additional road bans in many countries. This month will be marked with many national holidays in addition to the Pentecost and Whit Sunday celebrations, thus there will be additional road restrictions in many places. In this article, we provide a complete list of countries and dates on which traffic restrictions will take place in Europe.

May 1, Monday

Due to International Labor Day in Europe, additional road bans will be in effect in the following countries:

  • In Austria, bans will apply from midnight to 10 p.m.
  • In the Czech Republic, bans will apply from 1 p.m. until 10 p.m., they will be valid for vehicles weighing 7.5 tons and more.
  • In Greece, bans will apply from 4 p.m. until 11 p.m., they will be valid for vehicles weighing 3.5 tons and more.
  • In Italy, bans will apply from 9 a.m. until 10 p.m.
  • In Croatia, bans will apply from 2 p.m. until 11 p.m.
  • In Poland, bans will apply from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m., they will be valid for vehicles weighing 12 tons and more.
  • In Liechtenstein, the bans will be in place throughout the entire day and will apply to vehicles weighing 3.5t and over.
  • In Luxembourg, the bans will apply from midnight to 9.45 p.m. They will apply to vehicles weighing 7.5t and over.
  • In France, the bans will apply from midnight to 10 p.m., they will apply to trucks weighing 7.5t and more.
  • In Romania, bans will apply from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m.
  • In Slovakia, the bans will apply from midnight to 10 p.m., they will apply to vehicles weighing 7.5 tons and more.
  • In Slovenia, bans will apply from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m., they will be valid for vehicles weighing 7.5 tons and more.
  • In Hungary, bans will apply from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m., they will be valid for vehicles weighing 7.5 tons and more.
  • In Germany, the bans will apply from midnight to 10 p.m., they will apply to vehicles weighing 7.5 tons and more and trucks with trailers.

Tuesday, May 2

  • In Poland, due to a public holiday, bans will apply from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m.
  • In Slovenia, due to a public holiday, bans will apply from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m.

Wednesday, May 3

Due to the National Constitution Day, bans in Poland will apply from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m., they will be valid for vehicles weighing 12 tons and more.

Monday, May 8

  • In the Czech Republic, due to a public holiday, bans will apply from 1 p.m. until 10 p.m., they will be valid for vehicles weighing 7.5 tons and more.
  • In France, due to a public holiday, the bans will apply from midnight to 10 p.m., they will be valid for vehicles weighing 7.5t and more.
  • In Luxembourg, a 24-hour ban on vehicles weighing 7.5t or more heading toward France will be in effect. From 11.30 p.m. until midnight, this ban will apply to vehicles heading towards Germany.
  • In Slovakia, due to a public holiday, bans will be in place from midnight to 10 p.m., and will apply to vehicles weighing 7.5t and over.

May 9, Tuesday

Due to Europe Day in Luxembourg, bans will apply from midnight to 9.45 p.m.

May 17, Wednesday

  • In France, bans will apply from 10 p.m. until midnight.
  • In Luxembourg, bans for those driving towards France will apply from 9.30 p.m. until midnight, and for those going to Germany - from 11:30 p.m. until midnight.

May 18, Tuesday

In Greece, bans will apply from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m.

May 29, Monday

  • In Austria, Germany, Hungary, and France, the bans will be in effect from midnight to 10 p.m.
  • In Croatia, bans will be in effect from 3 p.m. until 11 p.m.
  • In Luxembourg, the bans will be in effect from midnight to 9.45 p.m.
  • In Switzerland and Liechtenstein, the bans will be in effect throughout the entire day.

May 30, Tuesday

In Croatia, due to a public holiday, bans will apply from 2 p.m. until 11 p.m.

May 31, Wednesday

In Romania, bans will apply from 4 p.m. until 10 p.m.

On Saturdays (May 6, 13, 20, 27th)

In May, Saturday road bans will be in effect in the following countries:

  • In Austria from 3 p.m. until midnight.
  • In France from 10 p.m. until midnight.
  • In Hungary from 10 p.m. until midnight (this prohibition does not apply to trucks of EURO 3 and higher categories operating in the international transport sector).
  • In Luxembourg from 9.30 p.m. to midnight for those heading towards France and from 11.30 p.m. until midnight for those heading towards Germany.

On May 27th, additional bans will be introduced in some countries:

  • In Austria, additional restrictions will apply on the A12 and A13 motorways for those heading towards Italy. These bans will be in effect from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m.
  • In Poland, bans will apply from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m.

Sundays (May 7, 14, 21, 28th)

In May, Sunday road bans will be in effect in the following countries:

  • In Austria, Germany, and Slovakia from midnight to 10 p.m. (On May 7th and 28th the road bans in France will apply throughout the entire day),
  • In the Czech Republic from 1 p.m. until 10 p.m.,
  • In Italy from 9 a.m. until 10 p.m.,
  • In Luxembourg from midnight to 9.45 p.m.,
  • In Liechtenstein, France, and Switzerland throughout the entire day,
  • In Slovenia from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m.,
  • In Hungary from midnight to 10 p.m. (this ban does not apply to trucks of EURO 3 and higher categories operating in the international transport sector).

On May 28th, additional bans will apply in some countries:

  • In Luxembourg, a ban for those driving towards France will apply throughout the entire day. From midnight to 9.45 p.m. and from 23.30 until midnight, bans will apply to those driving towards Germany.
  • In Poland, bans will apply from 8:00 a.m. until 10 p.m.
