Road bans in Europe in April 2023

In April of 2023, drivers in Europe will face a lot of changes when it comes to truck bans. Apart from the usual weekend restrictions, additional bans are going to be implemented in many countries due to upcoming Easter festivities and public holidays. In this article we provide the list of all truck bans that will be implemented in Europe this April.

April 6th, Thursday

Due to the public holiday in Hungary, an additional ban will be implemented from 10 p.m. until midnight.

April 7th, Friday (Good Friday)

Due to the Good Friday festivities, additional road restrictions will apply in some European countries:

  • In Croatia, the driving ban will apply to trucks weighing more than 7.5 tons and will be in force from 3 p.m. until 11 p.m.
  • In the Czech Republic, the driving ban will apply from 1 p.m. until 10 p.m.
  • In Luxembourg, the ban will apply to those driving toward Germany. It will be valid from midnight to 9:45 p.m.
  • In Germany, the ban will apply from midnight to 10 p.m.
  • In Slovakia, the ban will apply from midnight to 10 p.m. Exceptions will be made on some roads for heavy vehicles entering Slovakia from neighboring countries or arriving at a specific location in Slovakia (e.g.: company headquarters or truck unloading points).
  • In Slovenia, the driving ban will apply from 2 p.m. until 10 p.m.
  • In Switzerland, the driving ban will be in force throughout the entire day.
  • In Hungary, the driving ban will be in force from midnight to 10 p.m.
  • In Italy, the driving ban will be in force from 2 p.m. until 10 p.m.

April 8th, Saturday (Holy Saturday)

Due to the Holy Saturday festivities, additional road restrictions will apply in some European countries:

  • In Austria, the ban will apply from 3 p.m. until midnight.
  • In Croatia, the driving ban will apply to trucks weighing more than 7.5 tons and will be in force from 3 p.m. until 11 p.m.
  • In France, the driving ban will apply from 10 p.m. until midnight.
  • In Luxembourg, the driving ban will apply from 9:30 p.m. to midnight for those heading toward France and from 11:30 p.m. until midnight for those heading toward Germany.
  • In Poland, the driving ban will apply from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. It will apply to trucks weighing more than 12t.
  • In Hungary, the driving ban will apply from 10 p.m. until midnight. 
  • In Italy, the driving ban will apply from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

April 9th, Sunday (Easter)

Because of the Easter celebrations, additional road bans will be introduced in many European countries:

  • In Austria, the driving ban will be in effect from midnight to 10 p.m.
  • In Croatia, the driving ban will apply to trucks weighing more than 7.5 tons and will be in force from 2 p.m. until 11 p.m.
  • In the Czech Republic, the driving ban will apply from 1 p.m. until 10 p.m.
  • In France, the driving ban will apply throughout the entire day.
  • In Luxembourg, a ban on driving toward France will apply throughout the entire day. From midnight to 9:45 p.m. and from 11:30 p.m. until midnight, driving toward Germany will also be banned.
  • In Germany, the driving ban will apply from midnight to 10 p.m.
  • In Poland, the driving ban will apply from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m.
  • In Slovakia, the driving ban will apply from midnight to 10 p.m. 
  • In Slovenia, the driving ban will apply from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. 
  • In Switzerland, the driving ban will apply throughout the whole day.
  • In Hungary, the driving ban will apply throughout the whole day.
  • In Italy, the driving ban will apply from 9 a.m. until 10 p.m.
  • In Liechtenstein, the driving ban will apply throughout the whole day.

April 10th, Monday (Easter Monday)

Additional road bans will also apply on the Easter Monday in some European countries:

  • In Austria, the driving ban will apply from midnight to 10 p.m.
  • In Croatia, the driving ban will apply to trucks weighing more than 7.5 tons and will be in force from 2 p.m. until 11 p.m.
  • In the Czech Republic, the driving ban will apply from 1 p.m. until 10 p.m.
  • In France, the driving ban will apply from midnight to 10 p.m.
  • In Luxembourg, the driving ban will apply from midnight to 9:45 p.m.
  • In Germany, the driving ban will apply from midnight to 10 p.m.
  • In Poland, the driving ban will apply from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m.
  • In Slovakia, the driving ban will apply from midnight to 10 p.m. 
  • In Slovenia, the driving ban will apply from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m.
  • In Switzerland, the driving ban will apply throughout the whole day (except in the Ticino region).
  • In Hungary, the driving ban will apply from midnight to 10 p.m.
  • In Italy, the driving ban will apply from 9 a.m. until 10 p.m.
  • In Liechtenstein, the driving ban will apply throughout the whole day.

April 11th, Tuesday

A driving ban will be implemented in Italy from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.

April 25th, Tuesday

Due to the public holiday, a driving ban in Italy will be implemented from 9 a.m. until 10 p.m.

Other weekend bans

Apart from Easter weekend, the usual weekend bans will apply as always. These restrictions will be as follows:

April 1st, 15th, 22nd, 29th – these Saturday bans will apply in the following countries:
  • in Austria from 3 p.m. until midnight.
  • in France from 10 p.m. until midnight.
  • in Hungary from 10 p.m. until midnight (this prohibition does not apply to trucks of EURO 3 and higher categories operating in the international transport sector).
  • in Luxembourg from 9:30 p.m. to midnight for those heading toward France and from 11:30 p.m. until midnight for those heading toward Germany.
April 2nd, 16th, 23rd, 30th – these Sunday bans will apply in the following countries:
  • in Austria, France, Germany and Slovakia from midnight to 10 p.m.,
  • in the Czech Republic: April 2nd and 30th. - from 1 p.m. until 10 p.m., April 16th - from 12 p.m. until 11 p.m.,
  • in Italy from 9 a.m. until 10 p.m.,
  • in Luxembourg from midnight to 9:45 p.m.,
  • in Liechtenstein and Switzerland throughout the whole day,
  • in Slovenia from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m.,
  • in Hungary from midnight to 10 p.m. (this ban does not apply to trucks of EURO 3 and higher categories operating in the international transport sector).
