Germany to increase CO2 taxes for trucks

The German government is planning to approve a new law according to which the CO2 taxes will be increased greatly starting from December 1st of this year. During a meeting which took place this summer, the draft of this law was discussed. According to the draft, the new tax will be equal to €200 per tone of CO2 gas. This tax will apply only to heavy vehicles. Exceptions will apply solely to “zero-emission” trucks and only until the end of 2025.

This new tax will be implemented as an addition to the preexistent road tolls. This means that drivers and haulers will have to pay several cents more for each kilometer driven. The value of the tax will depend on the characteristics of the vehicle, such as its EURO category, its weight, and the number of axles. It is estimated that the price per kilometer will now be around 7,9% higher. Below we provide a table which shows what tariff will apply per kilometer.
