Starting in January 2027, significant changes will be introduced in Denmark—road tolls will now also apply to vehicles weighing 3.5 tons or more. Until now, road tolls have applied only to trucks weighing 12 tons or more.
With this change, the weight of the vehicle’s base – the motorized portion – will be taken into account, rather than the combined weight of the vehicle (e.g., the weight of the truck cabin, but not its total weight together with the trailer).
Exemptions will apply to environmentally friendly vehicles weighing between 3,501 and 4,250 kg. Road tolls will not apply if these vehicles produce zero emissions.
Road toll rates will depend on the vehicle’s CO2 emission class. Vehicles weighing between 3,501 and 11,999 kg will be subject to the rates listed in the table below
| CO2 emissions class | DKK / km | Environmental zone surcharge |
| Class 1 | 0.78 | 0.39 |
| Class 2 | 0.70 | 0.35 |
| Class 3 | 0.62 | 0.31 |
| Class 4 | 0.41 | 0.21 |
| Class 5 | 0.13 | 0.07 |
Failure to comply with the new rules – such as driving without an on-board unit or failing to pay the tolls – will result in fines for drivers ranging from 2,000 DKK to 9,000 DKK.
It is also important to note that further changes await travelers in Denmark in 2028 – there are plans to impose tolls on the country’s entire road network (75,000 km total).
