The reconstruction works of the Mont Blanc tunnel that were planned for this autumn are going to be postponed for some time due to the closure of the Frejus tunnel. Initially, the Mont Blanc tunnel was scheduled to close from September 4th until December 18th, however, large landslides in France have led to the closure of the Frejus tunnel and heavy traffic jams at the Mont Blanc tunnel, so it was decided to postpone the planned reconstruction work indefinitely.

It is not clear exactly when the Mont Blanc tunnel will be closed. As the number of bypass roads between Italy and France in the Alps is limited, the closure of this tunnel would have resulted in extremely heavy traffic on the A8 motorway. For now, the tunnel is expected to be closed on September 18th (Monday) and for the three following nights. However, it is not known when the tunnel will be closed for several weeks for reconstruction works. Given that this situation is constantly changing, the exact dates on which the Mont Blanc tunnel will be closed for a longer period will be announced later.

The Swiss authorities have also announced that the Gotthard Tunnel is going to be closed on several days for cleaning and maintenance work. The tunnel will be closed on the following days:

• From September 11th until the 15th (for 4 nights) - every night from 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. of the following day.
• From September 18th until the 22nd (for 4 nights) - every night from 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. of the following day.
• From the 25th until the 29th (for 4 nights) - every night from 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. of the following day.
• From October 2nd until the 4th (for 2 nights) - every night from 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. of the following day.

All vehicles weighing more than 3.5t will be stopped half an hour before the tunnel's scheduled closing time.
