The closing of the Kennedy Tunnel in the month of August

This August the Kennedy Tunnel in Antwerp, Belgium will be closed on some of the days of the month. Built under the river of Scheldt, this tunnel forms part of the R1 motorway and is used by cars, trucks, bicycles and trains. The tunnel will be closed due to maintenance work meant to remove defects in the tunnel‘s high-voltage system.

The Kennedy Tunnel will be closed on two weekends in August:

  • From August 5th (Saturday) until August 6th (Sunday), between midnight and 7 a.m.
  • From August 12th (Saturday) until August 13th (Sunday), between midnight and 7 a.m.

Although the tunnel will be closed during the nighttime hours, it is expected to disrupt traffic on other roads located nearby. The roads that will be affected include the following:

  • The E19 road from Brussels towards the R1 road in the direction of Ghent.
  • Wilrijk exit to the R1 road in the direction of Ghent.
  • Jan De Vos tunnel on the A112 road from Brussels to the R1 road in the direction of Ghent.
  • Road connecting Jan Devoslei (road N186) and the city of Kiel with the Bolivar tunnel and the R1 road in the direction of Ghent.
  • The junction from the Bolivar tunnel to the R1 road in the direction of Ghent.
  • E17 road in the direction of Antwerp from the Antwerp-West junction.
  • E34 and R1 roads towards Antwerp.
