In March this year, the Mont Blanc Tunnel will be completely closed on some days. There will also be more frequent inspections of trucks in Tyrol from now on. This article provides all the information about these important changes.
More frequent truck checks in Tyrol
Over the last two years, the number of checks carried out on trucks and their drivers on the roads in the Tyrol region has increased. The Municipality of Tyrol has decided that this year, due to the increase in the number of lorries passing by, road checks will be carried out 150 days a year (38 days more than planned).
These checks by the traffic police are very extensive as they consist not only of checking the drivers' documents, but also of a detailed examination of the trucks’ technical condition (e.g.: the checking of breaks brakes, axles, exhaust emissions, etc.). More than 4,000 checks are carried out each year. Checks are carried out in the Brenner Pass, on national roads in the municipalities of Leisach, Nauders and Mussau, at checkpoints in the towns of Kundl and Radfeld, and at some of the region’s rest areas.
In 2023, 11,500 technical faults were detected during the checks. In Radfeld and Kundl, 2,300 lorry drivers were banned from continuing their journeys. The proper technical condition of vehicles is essential to ensure the safety of drivers and the environment, which is why €55,000 has been invested this year in additional inspections.
March traffic restrictions in the Mont Blanc tunnel
On some days during the month of March, the traffic on the Mont Blanc Tunnel will be restricted or completely closed.
The tunnel will be completely closed from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. on the following days:
- 11-12 March (Monday-Tuesday),
- 12-13 March (Tuesday-Wednesday),
- 13-14 March (Wednesday - Thursday),
- 14-15 March (Thursday - Friday).
On 21-22 March (Thursday - Friday), the Mont Blanc Tunnel will be completely closed from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m.
On the days indicated below, the tunnel will be subject to traffic alterations and restrictions between 11.30 p.m. and 6 a.m.:
- 4-5 March (Monday-Tuesday),
- 5-6 March (Tuesday-Wednesday),
- 6-7 March (Wednesday - Thursday),
- 18-19 March (Monday-Tuesday),
- 19-20 March (Tuesday-Wednesday),
- 20-21 March (Wednesday-Thursday).
