Closure of the Arlberg Tunnel in Austria

Closure of the Arlberg Tunnel in Austria

The Arlberg Tunnel located in the Austrian regions of Tyrol and Vorarlberg is scheduled to be closed starting from 15 April. The tunnel will be closed for a period of seven months, until 22 November, due to new reconstruction works.

One of the possible detour routes is the B197/L197 road. With the start of the roadworks, traffic on this road is expected to increase significantly and drivers can expect congestions, especially during weekends. This road is open to all vehicles with a starting point or destination located in the surrounding municipalities.

However, it is important to bear in mind that Austria has weekend traffic restrictions from 9 a.m. on Saturdays to 10 p.m. on Sundays. Exemptions may apply for trucks with trailers if the point of departure or final destination is located in Bludenz, Feldkirch or Landeck. The place of loading or unloading must be in one of the towns indicated. The use of this road for the purpose of shortening the time of the journey is prohibited.

During the closure of the Arlberg Tunnel, the use of other surrounding roads will also be possible:

  • The Rosenheim-Munich road which goes through Germany.
  • The San Gotthard tunnel in Switzerland.
  • The San Bernardino Tunnel in Switzerland.
