Income tax return: What to do when you work in Germany half of the time?

Most Lithuanian long-haul truck drivers spend part of their working time on business trips in Germany. When it comes time to file their tax returns, they often have questions about the amount of income to report in Germany. To help you avoid double taxation and other issues, we’re sharing information on how to properly fill out your income tax return when you work in Germany part of the time.

Log in to the State Tax Inspectorate’s electronic filing system (EDS) in a way that’s convenient for you, such as through the e-Government portal. This will allow you to access the platform where you can file your income tax return electronically.

EDS1

When you select the "Electronic Form" option, you will be taken to this screen—there, select "Start Filling Out the Form."

EDS2

In Section B of the form (“Employment Income and Social Benefits Received”), you will see a list of your employment income and social benefits received. Select one of the fields, then click the “+” sign and the pencil icon to edit the information.

EDS3

Here you will find information about the amount of income tax paid abroad. Make sure that "Germany" is selected in the "Country code" field.

EDS4

If all the information provided is correct, close this field and proceed to the last section of the income tax return—“Additional Intermediate Calculations.” In the row “Tax-exempt income,” make sure the amount listed matches the income amount listed in the section on income earned in Germany.

EDS5

If all the information matches, confirm the details and submit your income tax return.
